One of the hottest, most contentious topics of conversation at the water cooler and broadcasts in the news is healthcare. Regardless of whether you are a proponent of the Affordable Healthcare Act, or you oppose it, one thing we all need to address is our own personal stake in our own health and wellness.
We live in a society that focuses too much on “disease management,” and too little on wellness and preventative care. This is terribly unfortunate, because if we all did a better job taking care of ourselves and our families, we would be a much healthier society as a whole. We would not have to rely on a pill or potion to treat our symptoms, and healthcare would not be the expensive, explosive subject it has become over the last decade.
In fact, by learning more about the human body and how the different systems work, you will be better equipped to make informed decisions about your health and wellness, as well as that of your family members.
This is the primary reason I developed an online Naturopathic Wellness Course, for anyone who wants to be empowered and proactive in taking control of their health. Through this course, individuals of all ages, parents, healthcare workers, and anyone invested in their own health or that of someone else, can gain a more clear understanding of the naturopathic approach to wellness and healing, to help change your life and that of your loved ones forever!
As a Certified Naturopathic Doctor, I have had the opportunity to talk to audiences across America about this very subject. The vast majority of our society has been conditioned to practice “disease management.” That is, when you feel bad, you see a doctor (or nurse practitioner), and get a prescription to “cure” what ails you. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, prescription drugs kill 290 people in the United States every day, which adds up to over 100,000 people each year.
A more natural approach would be to take appropriate measures to prevent illness from the get-go, thus reducing the need for pharmaceuticals, which can have many unwanted side effects. Most medications do not address the root cause of the disease but merely mask the symptoms, which usually lead to the use of even more mediations creating damage to the body systems. I call this a downward spiral toward more health challenges. After all, every drug has at least one side effect; often times there is a list of them. There are times we need pharmaceuticals to save lives but we should always be looking at how to bring the body back in to balance allowing the true healing process to take place.
